OVERVIEW

Our Relationship to Braintree Historical Commission

Although there may be members of the Braintree Historical Commission in the Braintree Historical Society, the Commission is the official town board responsible for approval of  projects involving historical alterations within Braintree. The Society is a non-profit organization who's mission is to preserve the historical culture, documentation, heritage of the great town of Braintree. As such, while separate groups, the two have a common interest in and share the love of the history of Braintree.

The Braintree Historical Commission (BHC) is established in accordance with provisions of Chapter 40; Section 8D of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with all the powers and duties of a Historic District Commission in accordance with Chapter 40C of the General Laws of the Commonwealth. The Historical Commission retains responsibilities and jurisdiction over the Braintree Town Center Historic District in accordance with Chapter 12.12 of Braintree ordinance as most recently amended.

Community Preservation Committee (CPC)

OVERVIEW

The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) is a seven member volunteer committee that is responsible for oversight of the Town’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) program. The CPC is appointed by the Mayor and meets monthly. In managing the program, the CPC has studied the needs, possibilities, and resources of the town’s:

• Open space

• Historic areas

• Outdoor recreation

• Community housing assets 

and developed goals for the enhancement of each through CPA projects
